Otobaia  2010  oil on linen  80x56 in.  (203.2x142.2 cm)
My grandmother Eteri Sotkilava was born in a beautiful village called Otobaia, in Abkhazia. Currently Otobaia is occupied by Russian troops. Present day Abkhazia is the land of ancient Colchis, a Georgian Kingdom. Colchis, according to Greek mythology, is where Argonauts came to look for the Golden Fleece and where Jason met Medea, the daughter of King Aetis, son of Helios,  the Sun God.

In 1992, the Kremlin provoked a conflict that turned into a war between Georgians and  Abkhaz ethnic groups, which lasted 13 months. Russian troops ended up occupying Georgia's territory up to this day. Twenty-five thousand  displaced Georgian refugees had to flee their homes and ancestral lands.
